Archaeologists unearth 5,000-year-old 'third-gender' caveman | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Archaeologists investigating a 5,000-year-old Copper Age grave in the Czech Republic believe they may have unearthed the first known remains of a gay or transvestite caveman, reports the Telegraph.

The man was apparently buried as if he were a woman, an aberrant practice for an ancient culture known for its strict burial procedures.

Since the grave dates to between 2900 and 2500 BC, the man would have been a member of the Corded Ware culture, a late Stone Age and Copper Age people named after the unique kind of pottery they produced. Men in this culture were traditionally buried lying on their right side with their heads pointing west, but this man was instead buried on his left side with his head pointing east, which is how women were typically buried.

"From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake," said lead archaeologist Kamila Remisova Vesinova. "Far more likely is that he was a man with a different sexual orientation, homosexual or transsexual."

Another clue is that Corded Ware men would typically be buried alongside weapons, hammers and flint knives, as well as food and drink to prepare them for their journey to the other side. But this man's grave instead contained only a traditional egg-shaped pot, which was what women were typically buried with.

With all the evidence taken together, archaeologists are confident that the best explanation for the strange burial is that the man was effeminate, perhaps a homosexual, and possibly a transvestite.

"We believe this is one of the earliest cases of what could be described as a 'transsexual' or 'third gender grave' in the Czech Republic," reiterated cooperating archaeologist Katerina Semradova.

Semradova also noted that archaeologists from a previous dig had uncovered a grave from the Mesolithic period where a female warrior was buried as a man, so mixed gender burials, though rare, were not unprecedented.

Homosexuality is a fact of nature. Human, primate, even birds exhibit homosexuals within their ranks.

It's great to learn how the dead were respected, even if they were gay..

sadly now some people disrespect a warriors funeral, in the name of religious hate and contempt for gays,

Homosexuality is a fact of nature, as is incest, pedophilia and murder. But because they are a prevalent fact of nature, does because of their frequency mean that their practice should be socially accepted? Or has same sex entertainment as a homosexual tolerance become idealism's in vogue

I love how you group consensual sex between two adults with sex with animals, sex with children, and with murder. Classy.

I also love how advocates of homosexual acceptance like to beneficially separate psychological motivated disorders by consensual authorization. Do you really believe that because an act is consensual that it then negates any legal responsibility or social decorum, How shallow and self serving, but at least it does appease unrestrained emotional desire.

homosexual tolerance become idealism's in vogue

I guess you missed the story.. it was in Vogue 5000 years ago, and respected..

homosexual intolerance by religious fanatics has become the idealism in vogue

I love how homosexual tolerance objectors love to cry that it is a disorder, and try to associate it as somehow abnormal. and has negative implications.. Classy indeed

@Ray This is what I think: I think you had a childhood where your parents used fear to create an environment of control around you. "legal responsibility or social decorum". This statement says everything. You do not live in a country where homosexuality is illegal. my guess would be that either one of your parents, grandparents, or possibly even yourself, have/had homosexual tendencies. With the propagation of fear that seems to have been prevalent in your family, it turned into hatred, and vitriol, loosely encased in a set of "responsibility and decorum" that was created, not by the world you exist in, but by your environment; making you believe that the greater country at large feels that two people wouldn't be allowed to love each other. The truth is: most Americans believe in the American Dream. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. It breaks my heart that you would be raised in a family that closed you off from the love of the world around you. I will pray for you, and I know you are going to write a response that will probably attack me. It would be against your programming if you didn't. I wont write back, because that would just help confirm, to the psychosis, that it had validity. I hope that you can find help for your fear. There are some really great support groups for people who have been brainwashed by religion, and doctrine. My GF had to do a lot of work to help her overcome her Mormon upbringing. Good Luck.

Jim, … in vogue 5000 years ago, hardly, scantly tolerated maybe but commonly practiced, where is the overwhelming evidence.

Homosexuality has been a connate element of mankind's sexuality ever since the brain has had the control over sexual orientation and creating desire. It doesn't require a great intellect to realize that dual gender copulation equals species propagation and/or proliferation. Then too single gender fornication equates to extinction, now do you not think that those results were designed by nature to tolerate while dissuade a homosexual predominance.

Again state your ridiculous contention that homosexuality is not an aberrant activity and doesn't carry negative consequences if dominantly practiced.

In a world where man has no natural predators, the only recourse for population control would be for God to amp up same sex couples. Or we could all just die from starvation, and over population. An upsurge in Homosexuality during the worlds biggest upsurge in population is, i think, one of the best cases for proving the existence of an intelligent designer.

Ray .. re you ridiculous comment..

I would suggest there are 8 Billion reason why there are no negative affects of homosexual.. the normal occurance of 3=10% of the population is insufficient to cause the dieoff of any species.. but contrair.. has been shown by nature and the animal kingdom that homosexuals play a significant role in the the raising of orphaned offspring... if not for such actions by low reproduction species.. they would die off..

this may have been the orignal intent for biblical colonies to survive, and similar measures of mandatory reproduction may be needed in other worldly colonys in the future..

re the OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE READ THE STORY!! 5000 year old burial customs.

so by now there would be evidence of any negative effects?? where is the overwhelming evidence to support your statements... as yet you have provided NONE.. only your claims..

archeologists have found evidence 5000 years old that support mine

IT doesn't take someone smarter than a finger painter to figure out... being gay is ok, and should be accepted...

Jim, … " Men were traditionally buried lying on their right side with their heads pointing west, but this man was instead buried on his left side with his head pointing east, which is how women were typically buried."

This is the overwhelming historical evidence of accepted homosexual tolerance, more biased conjecture than actual evidence of life style appreciation and respect.

As for as natures negative connotation indicators, like greed, also a psychologically motivated compulsion. Then as an individual's affliction it carries little societal damage. But when multiplied by common practice it becomes a greater significant social danger. Exampled by our own country's sale of its political quid pro quo allegiance to plutocratic greed.

Homosexuality should be humanely tolerated but not publicly sanctioned.

I have a wild speculation as well.

"Caveman (not really) found in Europe was deposed from leadership and had his male parts chopped off. Upon execution they buried him disrespectfully as a woman to show dominance."

Oh yeah, it is bull@!$%#, and not based on any real facts, but neither is the other story. I can prove that deposed leaders throughout history have been shamed and even been buried in disrespectful manners, so it is just as valid.

I don't believe any of the crap I wrote above to be true, but I want good reporting based on facts, of which we have none witha consistency above jello at present.

remains of a gay or transvestite caveman

Yeah, right... Yes people had gay relations back then, it was more primitive though, they didn't have higher concepts of self restraint but they definitely weren't like the guys on queer eye.

Great seed, but it is based on wild speculation at best. Every creditable archaeologists in the world has debunked this as wild fancy. I am not in any way suggesting that Cavemen did not have homosexual relationships or that cavemen did not except homosexuals in society, just that this story is an utter fallacy. One the skeleton is not that of a Caveman. It is not old enough. The people talked about here are pre-bronzaged farmers. Two they have no conclusive tests including DNA to assure it is a male skeleton. They can presume it based on measurements, but that is not always reliable. Plus you cannot in any way tell a persons Sexual Orientation from their Skeleton. He could have been a hermaphrodite even. There are a meriad of other options, but this conclusion was the most sensational. Scientists around the world have already spoken out against it since it happened in April. Those findings were at best irresponsible and at worst flat out wrong. Sorry guys.
